Dear Union Siblings of Local 4408,
It is with deep gratitude and heartfelt emotion that we share news of a significant transition within our union. After more than 25 years of exceptional leadership, unwavering solidarity, and dedicated service, our respected Executive Vice-President, Veronica Aguirre, is retiring.
Veronica’s influence on the Illinois Federation of Public Employees is immeasurable. For over two decades, she has been a tireless champion for workers’ rights, a fearless advocate in every arena, and a trusted voice when our union needed guidance the most. But beyond her activism and leadership, she has given something even more meaningful—herself.
Her friendship, her mentorship, and her unwavering belief in the potential of every member have shaped the heart of this organization. She leaves behind a legacy built not just on accomplishments, but also on the countless people whose lives she has touched, supported, and inspired.
As we honor Veronica’s extraordinary service, we also recognize the responsibility that comes with this moment of transition. It is with appreciation and confidence that we announce the temporary appointment of Joseph “Mic” Middleton as our new Executive Vice-President.
Mic’s willingness to step forward at this pivotal time speaks volumes about his character and his commitment to IFPE. For years, Mic has demonstrated steady leadership, a strong work ethic, and a deep respect for the labor movement. He has always been someone who shows up—not for recognition, but for the members, for the work, and for the greater good of our union.
Taking on the role previously held by someone as impactful as Veronica is no small undertaking. Yet, Mic approaches this challenge with humility, integrity, and a genuine desire to honor the foundation Veronica has built. He understands the weight of the position, and he accepts it not out of obligation, but out of a sincere dedication to ensuring continuity, stability, and strong representation for our members.
In stepping up, Mic is not just filling a vacancy, but he is also embracing an opportunity to carry forward the principles of solidarity, fairness, and service that define IFPE. We are deeply grateful for his readiness to shoulder this responsibility and for the leadership he brings during this period of change.
We ask all members to join us in expressing our profound gratitude to Veronica for her decades of service, friendship, and mentorship—and in offering full support and encouragement to Mic as he steps into this role with commitment, heart, and respect.
In Solidarity and Appreciation,
Matt Emigholz
