Immunity After the Second COVID-19 Vaccine

There is a lot of information out there about timelines and the efficacy rates of the COVID-19 vaccines, in particular, Pfizer and Moderna. Are they effective right after you get them? Why are two doses needed? Can the vaccine protect you against other strains of the new coronavirus? We do know that vaccines are finally being administered and hoping this will curb the pandemic. We also know that it will take time for the vaccine to kick in. In the meantime, everyone should still be playing it safe, mask up, wash your hands, and practice social distancing, even after getting immunized.
