IFT Legislative Lobby Day Recap

  • 2 min read

Today, hundreds of us stood together at the State Capitol - educators, higher education professionals, school staff, retirees, and public employees from across Illinois - united in one message: Our students, campuses, and communities deserve full funding.

WHAT WE ACCOMPLISHED TODAY

  1. We held a powerful press conference.

We opened our Lobby Day today by raising our collective voice from the Blue Room of the State Capitol. Members shared their stories to illustrate the real impacts of chronic underfunding and the urgent need for a tax system that ensures the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share so our schools and services can thrive. 2. We delivered our letter to the Governor’s office.

IFT leaders hand delivered our letter to the Governor’s office. In the letter, we urge Governor Pritzker to fully fund public education, higher education, and essential services, and to adopt a tax system that relies on the ultra-wealthy paying their fair share. Your signatures gave that letter power and urgency.

  3. We had direct conversations with lawmakers.

After our press conference, members met with legislators from both chambers to make our case, explain the consequences of underfunding, and show how we can work together to make Illinois #1 in education from preK to PhD.

  4. We showed our member power and solidarity.

This was a day of unity. Members from across the state and from different constituencies, from school districts and communities large and small, connected, engaged, and strengthened the solidarity that fuels our movement.

  5. We advocated for our students and communities.

Every moment today sent a clear message: We refuse to accept a system that shortchanges our students and hinders our communities from thriving. Today, we stood up for a stronger, fairer Illinois.

WHAT’S NEXT:

Tomorrow, Governor Pritzker will deliver his State Budget Address, and we’ll be watching closely for:

  • A commitment to fully fund K-12 schools

  • Investments in community colleges and universities

  • Support for essential services

  • A revenue plan that finally demands the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share.

This is a critical moment. After today’s powerful display of unity and advocacy, lawmakers know we’re paying attention and intend to hold them accountable.

STAY TUNED

We’ll send out our response to the governor’s address later in the week. And we’re looking forward to another Full Funding Friday on March 6.

Thank you again for your dedication and action.
