On Thursday, April 28, the Springfield & Central Illinois Trades & Labor Council is hosting a Workers Memorial Day Dedication Ceremony at 10:00 AM in front of the Illinois AFL-CIO building located at 534 S. Second Street in Springfield. The Ceremony will honor all workers who have died or suffered occupational injury or illness on the job. We will honor the dead, and recommit our pledge to continue the fight for safe workplaces.
This year, the Central Labor Council is dedicating the day to fallen DCFS AFSCME worker Deidre Silas, to honor her life and to recognize the dangers still present in the workplace.
The Ceremony will last about 30 minutes, and it will include roses being laid and names being read for each of the deceased workers. We will also have speakers and a short prayer. Due to the construction on the Capitol Complex, we will not be marching to the Worker Memorial Monument this year. Members are always encouraged, however, to visit the site to reflect and honor the fallen workers.
Please contact the Worker Memorial Day Chair, Shannon Garrett, at (217) 544-8562 with any questions.
