President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have forced a government shutdown to continue gutting our country’s healthcare system and leaving patients with nowhere to turn. This shutdown comes on the heels of Trump’s big, ugly bill that cut Medicaid coverage for millions. The AFT is closely tracking the shutdown. You can see the most recent updates here.
Democracy Forward, on behalf of AFGE and AFSCME, is moving to block mass firings during this shutdown. The filing argues that Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor violated the law through their threats to engage in mass firing of federal workers. You can read the filing here.
This shutdown is only going to end when Congress and the Trump administration understand that the American people want to stop the cuts to healthcare and other programs that working families rely on.
