IFT President Dan Montgomery Reacts to the Murders of Asian Americans in Atlanta

Westmont, IL – Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) President Dan Montgomery released the following statement in response to the murders of eight people - including six Asian American women - in Atlanta this week:

"Our union is deeply saddened and disturbed by the senseless murders of members of our Asian American community that occurred in Atlanta. In the midst of the increased acts of violence and hate directed towards Asian Americans in recent months, this tragedy is yet more proof that we have much work to do as a society to achieve racial justice.
"These horrific events further our union's resolve to fight for racial justice and to support culturally responsive teaching standards and trauma-informed instruction. The need is clearer than ever.
As educators and public servants, we stand in solidarity with our Asian American neighbors, friends, students, coworkers and family. Of course we deplore violence and racism, and we call on all Illinoisans to actively support and protect all those in the AAPI community, especially the elderly and our children in schools.
"Only by working together to dismantle racism and hate can we achieve a truly safe and just society for everyone. The IFT and our members are committed to that work."
