Illinois lawmakers are making decisions right now that will shape the future of our schools, universities, and public services, and educators need clear, accurate information about what has happened so far and what’s still possible.

That’s why we’re inviting you to join an important statewide webinar with IFT and State Senator Rob Martwick to break down recent legislative developments and what they mean for funding our schools, higher education and communities.

  • Monday, April 27 at 6:30 PM

  • Hear from IFT leaders and State Senator Rob Martwick

  • Find out why it’s so important that we’re ready for May Day on May 1

Last week, the Illinois House advanced legislation that gives decades‑long tax breaks to large corporate “megaprojects” while failing to vote on proposals that would increase school funding by asking millionaires to pay their fair share. Meanwhile, state services remain under-resourced, and higher education has been chronically underfunded for decades in Illinois.

Our students feel the consequences firsthand: fewer resources for classrooms, cut programs, teachers, faculty, and staff stretched thin, limited support. And we know this all means more pressure on working families to make up the difference.

IFT and our allies are continuing to push for the Adequate and Equitable Public University Funding Act - along with the PSRP Unemployment Equity act and revenue solutions like taxing the ultra-wealthy to equitably and fully fund our schools.

This webinar will cover:

  • What the House vote (and non‑vote) means for schools and public services

  • What’s still possible as budget negotiations continue

  • Why fair revenue options—like taxing the ultra‑wealthy—matter now more than ever

  • How IFT members can stay engaged in shaping the outcome

This discussion also comes as IFT locals across the state are preparing for May Day actions on May 1. Understanding what’s happening in Springfield helps strengthen our collective action, whether you’re attending May Day in Chicago, joining a local event, or organizing in your own community.

Register here.

We hope you’ll join us tomorrow for the latest updates and stay connected as this critical fight for full and fair funding continues.
